Orange Alert In Parts Of Kerala And Puducherry: TN Govt Closed Schools

Orange Alert in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

Recent heavy rainfall has impacted regions across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry, leading to concerns among the public. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted significant rainfall in isolated parts of Kerala until November 24. In response, the Tamil Nadu government has taken precautionary measures, directing the closure of all government and private schools in specific districts, including Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Viruthunagar, Pudhukottai, and Niligiri due to the anticipated heavy rains.

Kerala’s Alert Status

Earlier on November 22, the IMD issued a red alert for Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district. The district collector, A Shibu, implemented stringent measures on November 24, restricting nighttime traffic from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and halting tourist activities such as kayaking and boating in hilly areas due to the ongoing heavy rains.

Tamil Nadu Precautions

Authorities issued these measures to prevent potential landslides, mudslides, and localized flooding, emphasizing caution for those visiting Sabarimala, especially during nighttime. The orange alert in Thiruvananthapuram and Idukki districts also warned residents of possible disturbances due to heavy rains.

Weather Forecast and Alerts

Over the following five days, Kerala might experience mild to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning, attributed to cyclonic circulations over Tamil Nadu. IMD’s press release indicates potential thunderstorms, light to moderate rainfall, and gusty winds in specific districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur.

Continued Concerns and Alerts

The weather service also highlighted the likelihood of similar weather patterns in Tamil Nadu’s Karaikal and Puducherry regions. Consequently, the Puducherry government declared a school holiday as a precautionary measure on Wednesday.

As these regions brace themselves for the persistent heavy rainfall and potential risks of floods and landslides, authorities and residents remain on high alert, taking necessary precautions to ensure safety and minimize any potential hazards posed by the ongoing inclement weather conditions.
